Presented by:
Dean Schaffer, State Bar of Texas
Unplanned cessation of practice creates hardship. This is particularly true for solo practitioners and small firms. The lawyer’s family is in crisis; the clients have lost their champion; and the value of the practice collapses. Lawyers can do better. Succession planning promotes seamless representation of clients, while at the same time preserving value in the practice.
Dean Schaffer joined bar staff in 2017 after 29 years in litigation and outside general counseling. Dean’s primary focus at the State Bar is to field situations in which lawyers are “deceased or otherwise absent.” His work on the Cessation of Practice Pilot Program earned a State Bar of Texas Presidential Citation.
