SABA Law School Liaison Committee launches Mentor Circle at St. Mary’s School of Law

“We’ve taken the best of mentor programs and rolled them into a volunteer friendly format,” reports Sara Dysart, SABA Law School Liaison Committee Chair. The San Antonio Bar Association Law School Liaison Committee and St. Mary’s School of Law Board of Visitors are launching a pilot program of scheduled monthly meetings called Mentor Circles for 2L and 3L law students. Each Mentor Circle will consist of two volunteer lawyers and eight students. Mary Stich, Mentor Circles Chair, adds “We have removed the burden of content creation and have drafted Discussion Topics and framework for the volunteers to use.  It is a very user-friendly program.”

Mentors are being solicited from the legal community with considerations of diversity of practice area, work environments and experience levels.

The goal of Mentor Circles is to bring together experienced attorneys with law students in a confidential, small group setting to discuss different practice areas and work settings, real world ethical dilemmas, career strategies and other career enhancing topics that are not typically addressed in the classroom.

St. Mary’s University School of Law Dean Patricia Roberts will nominate students whom she believes will enhance the success of the pilot program and potentially allow for broader participation in future semesters.  Participation in the pilot program will be limited to 80 law students on a first come, first served basis.
