October a Great Month for CLEs

On Friday, October 11 the 56th Annual Criminal Law Institute CLE in Honor of District Judge A.A. Semaan hosted an impactful seminar on The Crossroads of Criminal Law & Family Law. Course directors included Justice Beth Watkins of the Fourth Court of Appeals, Judge Lori Valenuzela of the 437th District Court and Bobby Barrera of Robert Barrera, PC

After a warm welcome by the course directors, Judge Rosie Speedline Gonzalez, of County Court 13, kicked off the seminar with an enlightening lecture on how bond issues, probation conditions and temporary orders can affect (or not) clients' cases in family court. She was followed by a lively panel discussion hosted by Judge Norma Gonzales of the 131st Civil District Court and Demetrio Duarte of Duarte & Molina, PC, who addressed the differences in discovery for criminal and civil law, including the adverse implications of overlooking the slightest procedural nuance.

Another highlight of the October 11th seminar was course director Bobby Barrera's moderated panel Risks of Taking the Stand v. Pleading the 5th & Practical Implications. Judge Cathleen "Cathy" Stryker of the 224th Civil District Court served on the panel alongside Monica Guerrero of Law Office of Monica Guerrero.

The following week's CLE Seminar, Civil District Courts Bench Bar Bench Motions & Jury Trialspacked just as much of a dynamic punch. The Seinfeld-themed seminar was hosted by course directors Judge Cathleen "Cathy" Stryker of the 224th Civil District Court, Judge Norma Gonzales of the 131st Civil District Court and Judge Laura Salinas of the 166th Civil District Court.

Each course lecture was introduced with a cleverly picked Seinfeldclip that related to the topic. One memorable example includes Court Reporters - No Soup for You!, hosted by Judge Michael Mery of the 37th Civil District Court & Amy Hinds, Judge Angelica Jimenez of the 408th Civil District Court & Craig Carter, and Austin Hagee of Martin, Disiere, Jefferson & Wisdom, LLP. Another feature from the seminar was Judge Stryker's panel on voir dire, called Jury Selection - Hello Newman....Understanding Who Your Enemy isand featured Judge Rosie Alvarado of the 438th Civil District Court and Chris Mazzola, SAYLA President and attorney at Ketterman, Rowland & Westlund
