Michael J. Ritter (San Antonio) has been nominated to run for President of the Texas Young Lawyers Association (TYLA). TYLA is a division of the State Bar of Texas, an administrative agency within the judicial branch of the State of Texas. The TYLA President serves on the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee of the State Bar.
Ritter is the first candidate openly from the LGBTQ+ community to run in an election for a statewide State Bar office. If elected, he would be the first person in Texas history openly from the LGBTQ+ community elected to serve in a statewide position in Texas’s Judicial Branch. This election is also historic because it is the first election in State Bar history to be entirely virtual.
Ritter, 35, currently serves as the Chair of the LGBT Law Section of the San Antonio Bar Association, and as a Council Member of the LGBT Law Section of the State Bar of Texas. He is also a Staff Attorney at the San Antonio court of appeals. He is a graduate of Trinity University and The University of Texas School of Law. The other nominee is Reginald Wilson (Houston), who is a senior finance associate at the law firm of Norton Rose Fulbright. The TYLA Board of Directors unanimously approved both nominees, to be announced on March 1st.
Over 25,600 lawyers throughout Texas are eligible to vote in the election. TYLA’s members are attorneys in their first five years of practice or under the age of 37 as of June 1 of the membership year. TYLA and its members serve the governmental and administrative function of promoting public service by attorneys in their respective communities.
The election will occur in April 2021. Voting in the State Bar elections starts on April 1st and ends April 30th. The winner of the election will be determined on April 30th.
